Baku City Guide: Old City, Flame Towers and the Caspian Coast
By the Idea Holiday team · 4 min read
Short answer
Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan, on the Caspian Sea, with a historic old city and modern architecture side by side. Three days covers the Old City, the modern landmarks and the waterfront. Entry rules differ by passport, so we confirm the documents before you book.
The Old City
Icherisheher, the walled Old City, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk the narrow lanes, visit the Maiden Tower and the palace complex, and go in the late afternoon for softer light.
Modern landmarks
The Flame Towers light up in the evening and are visible across the city. The Heydar Aliyev Centre, designed by Zaha Hadid, is a short taxi ride from the centre.
The Caspian waterfront
The Baku Boulevard runs along the Caspian Sea, with cafés and walkways. Go in the evening, when it is cooler and busier.
Getting around
Use taxis and ride apps for most trips, and agree the fare before you travel. The metro is also useful for longer distances.
