By the Idea Holiday team · 4 min read
Short answer
Bodh Gaya is where the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment, and it is one of Buddhism's most important places. Stay two nights to see the Mahabodhi Temple, the monasteries and the town at a relaxed pace. October to March is the best season.
Mahabodhi Temple and the Bodhi tree
The Mahabodhi Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit early in the morning, when it is quieter, and follow the rules for the sacred Bodhi tree area. Dress modestly and keep noise low.
International monasteries
Bodh Gaya has monasteries built by Buddhist communities from many countries, including Thai, Japanese, Tibetan and Bhutanese. Walk between them in the morning, when the light is good and the crowds are smaller.
Getting there
Gaya airport is close to Bodh Gaya, and Gaya is a major rail junction. Taxis and cabs make the short trips easy.
Combine it with Rajgir and Nalanda
Nalanda's ancient university ruins and Rajgir's Vulture Peak are a short drive away, roughly one and a half to two hours by road. A day trip to both works well if you have two or three nights.
