Holi Trip Ideas: Where to Go for Holi and Spring Festivals

By the Idea Holiday team · 4 min read

Short answer

Holi falls in March, often on a long weekend, and the date changes every year. Celebrating in a city means crowds and wet clothes. For a calmer holiday in the same season, Goa's warm, dry beaches are the easiest choice, and Thailand's Songkran water festival in mid-April is another fun option.

Celebrating Holi in India

Many towns hold Holi events on the main day and the day before. Book hotels early, keep phones and cameras in zip bags, and wear clothes you do not mind losing.

Goa in March

The weather is warm and dry and the beaches are open. Stay in the south for quieter days, or in the north if you want cafés and evenings out. Book before the long weekend, when rooms fill quickly.

Thailand in April: Songkran

Songkran is Thailand's New Year water festival, usually from 13 to 15 April. Expect water fights in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the beach towns. It is a fun week but not a quiet one, so keep the first and last nights flexible.

Plan the long weekend

Public holidays move every year, so check the dates before you book flights. A two-night Goa break or a three-night Kerala trip from a metro city works well for a festival weekend.
