Kashmir vs Ladakh in Summer
By the Idea Holiday team · 5 min read
Short answer
Kashmir is green, easy and suits families and honeymoons. Ladakh is dry, high and dramatic, and suits travellers who like adventure and can handle altitude. Both are best from May to September.
Scenery and stays
Kashmir has lakes, houseboats and meadows. Ladakh has bare mountains, monasteries and lakes like Pangong, which change colour through the day.
Altitude and health
Leh sits at about 3,500 metres, so rest for the first one or two days. Srinagar is much lower, and Gulmarg and Pahalgam are gentle places to ease into the mountains.
Permits and roads
Ladakh needs inner line permits for Nubra and Pangong, and the Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh roads open only for part of the year. Kashmir's main places need no special permit for Indian travellers.
Choosing
Pick Kashmir for a relaxed, green holiday with family or a honeymoon. Pick Ladakh for a bike trip, a road trip or the high passes, with six to seven nights from Leh.
FAQs
Is Kashmir or Ladakh better for a first trip?
Kashmir is easier for a first trip, with lower altitude and shorter drives.
Can I combine both?
Yes, with a road or flight between them. Plan nine to eleven nights and check road status, because the Srinagar–Leh highway depends on the weather.
Is Ladakh suitable for older travellers?
With rest days and a doctor's advice for heart or lung conditions, a gentle plan works well. We set the pace around your group.
