Sikkim Trip Guide: Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake and Nathula
By the Idea Holiday team · 5 min read
Short answer
Sikkim is a small Himalayan state with monasteries, lakes and mountain views. A four- to five-night trip covers Gangtok, a lake day and a quieter stay in Pelling. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) have the clearest views.
Gangtok and the monasteries
Gangtok is the capital, with monasteries, a cable car and local markets. Visit the monasteries in the morning and walk the market areas in the late afternoon.
Tsomgo Lake and Nathula
Tsomgo Lake is a glacial lake reached by road. Nathula is a border pass that needs a special permit, which we arrange, and it may be closed on some days, so keep a flexible plan.
Pelling and the west
Pelling is a calmer base with views of Kanchenjunga on clear days. Visit the old monastery nearby and go early for the best mountain views.
Getting around and weather
Roads are steep and winding, so travel by private cab with a driver. Weather can change quickly, so pack layers and a rain jacket, and keep a buffer day.
